Oasis Siwa: A Hidden Gem of Egypt
The Siwa Oasis is one of the most remote and intriguing corners of Egypt, nestled in the Western Desert, about 50 km from the Libyan border. It boasts a unique ecosystem, surrounded by endless sands yet abundant in fresh and saline lakes, lush palm groves, and thermal springs. Due to its isolation, Siwa has preserved a distinctive culture that sets it apart from the rest of Egypt.
Renowned primarily for the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, Siwa gained fame after Alexander the Great visited in 331 BC. According to legend, it was here that he received a prophecy that affirmed his divine heritage. Siwa is also associated with the mysterious disappearance of Cambyses' Persian army in the desert.
The local population, mainly comprised of Berbers, are descendants of ancient peoples who inhabited this part of Africa long before the arrival of the Egyptians. They speak Siwi, a variety of Berber language, along with Arabic. Traditional Siwan crafts include basket weaving, stone carving, jewellery making, and the famous henna designs. Their culture is a rich blend of Egyptian, Greek, and African traditions, beautifully reflected in their architecture, rituals, and attire.
